What the difficulty levels mean

Difficulty depends on how many numbers are filled in to start: fewer given numbers means you need more advanced solving strategies.

How to solve sudoku

The rule of sudoku is simple: fill the 9×9 grid so that every row, every column, and each of the nine 3×3 boxes contains the digits 1 to 9 exactly once — no repeats. You never need math or guessing; every puzzle on this page is solvable with logic alone.

Beginner techniques

Scanning rows, columns, and boxes

Pick a digit and scan each row, column, and 3×3 box to see where it can still go. When a box has only one empty cell where that digit fits, you have found a placement. This cross-hatching is the fastest way to fill an easy grid.

Spotting single candidates

Look at one empty cell and rule out every digit already present in its row, column, and box. If only one digit survives, it has to go there. Hunting for these "naked singles" steadily opens up the rest of the puzzle.

Using pencil marks

When scanning stalls, write small candidate numbers in the corner of each empty cell. Seeing all the options at once makes pairs and hidden singles jump out, and it stops you from forgetting a possibility on harder puzzles.

Tip: start with the easy PDFs to build the scanning habit, then move up a level once you can finish without erasing. If you ever get stuck, the full answer key at the back of every PDF lets you check a single cell instead of giving up.
